Description
The Structural Heart Fellowship at the University of Minnesota was established in 2013, with our inaugural fellow starting in July 2014. Since then, we have trained 12 structural fellows through a robust, high-volume program.
Fellows rotate through three hospitals: a University Hospital, a high-volume private hospital, and the Minneapolis VA, gaining broad clinical exposure across diverse practice settings. During the fellowship year, trainees participate in approximately 300 TAVR procedures, 100 left atrial appendage occlusions (LAAO), and 60 mitral and tricuspid valve procedures. In addition, fellows perform numerous ASD and PFO closures, as well as other miscellaneous structural heart cases.
Fellows work alongside more than 10 structural interventional cardiologists, providing a wide array of experience and mentorship. Call responsibilities are shared with the interventional cardiology fellowship on an every-fourth-night schedule. During the call, fellows have an outstanding opportunity to gain hands-on experience with ECMO cannulation and management in the catheterization lab. Our program performs more than 300 ECMO procedures annually in the cath lab.
Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have completed three-year ACGME-accredited Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship
- Have completed one-year ACGME-accredited Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
- Be board eligible in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology at the start of training
