Specific projects aim to answer clinically relevant questions using methods ranging from molecular level studies to clinical projects in diagnostics, therapeutics, and interventions, such as first-in-human catheter-based cardiovascular interventions. The Branch places a strong emphasis on creating an environment where scientists and physician scientists can work together on disease-specific issues using the most appropriate approaches available in the spectrum between bench, the bedside, and community. This basic research helps fuel scientific discovery that may one day help advance research related to heart, lung, blood, and sleep conditions or other fields.
The faculty in the NHLBI DIR is an outstanding group of internationally recognized biomedical researchers covering a wide range of basic, clinical, and population research topics (https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/research/intramural) complemented by the other research institutes within the DIR (List of Institutes and Centers | National Institutes of Health (NIH)).
