Education and training are cornerstones of the program. The institution maintains long standing, ACGME accredited fellowship programs in general cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, vascular and cardiothoracic surgery, and advanced practice provider cardiovascular fellowships.
The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine was created in 2025, The Department transitioned from Internal Medicine to reflect the continued growth, clinical volume, and academic mission of cardiovascular services across the enterprise.
- Full-time, 1.0FTE (80% clinical, 20% administrative)
- Up to 20% research Effort can be added with funding
- 8 Clinical half-day sessions per week (Ambulatory clinic, imaging interpretation) and 2 administrative sessions. Equal rotation in inpatient service and call shifts across the HF provider group.
- As Section Chief, this position will report to the Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and be responsible for the development of clinical and academic programs within advanced heart failure
- Implement a long-term vision for the Section that is built around excellence in our three core academic missions of teaching, patient care, and research and around our mission to improve health equity for the populations we serve.
- Develop extramural research programs in the Section that span the Atrium Health Enterprise and that are fully aligned with institutional strengths and with the focus of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Translational Center of Excellence in Cardiovascular Science. Continue to grow the Section’s portfolio of industry and non-industry funded clinical trials.
- Recruit and retain exceptional research and clinical faculty and advanced practice providers. Support the career development of Section members and serve as a nurturing mentor.
- Build strong working relationships with other Cardiovascular Medicine section chiefs and Enterprise leaders and maintain strong collaborative and collegial relationships with other academic departments and clinical services
- Opportunity to help develop and lead a future Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Fellowship Program.
- Primary site: Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston Salem
- Secondary site: High Point Medical Center in High Point
- Outreach clinic opportunities: Elkin, Wilkes, Lexington, Davie, Greensboro, Hugh Chatham, Alleghany
- 1:4, scheduled in weekly blocks (including call), goal 1:6
- Rotating weekly schedule that focuses on heart failure or advanced therapies
- Rounding includes ICU
- Multidisciplinary rounding team includes APPs and learners
- One cath lab day during advanced therapies week at Wake Forest Baptist
- Able to accommodate emergency biopsies
- Right heart caths and biopsies
Outpatient
- Winston-Salem clinic 1-2 days/week on average
- Outreach clinic 1 day/week on average
- 60-minute new, 30-minute return patients
- Echo (optional)
- CPX
- Call rotation aligns with inpatient service week
- No general cardiology call

Clinical Experience in Heart Transplantation to Include Post Graduate Experience Candidates must meet, or be eligible to meet United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) accreditation for a Heart Transplant Program
